Up from 300 million in December 2014.

400 million people now use Instagram every month, the company announced in a blog post today.

The Facebook-owned platform is growing at a staggering pace, up from 300 million monthly active users (MAUs) last December. For context: Pinterest recently announced it had reached 100 million MAUs. Instagram added that amount of users in roughly nine months.

The number shows that the appeal of Instagram continues to grow despite the platform's ramping up of its advertising program, the addition of video and end of its square-only format, though the format change was introduced only last month.

Instagram, which Facebook acquired for $1 billion in April 2012, is particularly strong internationally, with 75% of its users living outside of the U.S., according to the blog post. The international growth is not surprising, since you don't need to speak someone's language to understand their photos.

Photos and video appear to be where the action is heading in social media right now. The text-focused Twitter, hovering at 316 million monthly active users, would surely love to experience just a bit of the same growth boom.
