But the Korean company says it might want it back.

Nearly five years after Apple originally sued Samsung in the US for violating its patents on iPad and iPhone, the Korean company has agreed to pay nearly $550 million in damages.

It's a far cry from the $2.5 billion Apple initially sought when it sued Samsung in 2011 for "slavishly" copying its devices. Following an initial judgment against Samsung, that figure came down to $548 million earlier this year following appeals.

Samsung had announced its intention to file an appeal of the ruling to the US Supreme Court, and kept that option open in a joint petition filed Thursday with Apple in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California. In the same petition, Samsung wrote that it would be entitled to reimbursement for the $548 million payment in case of a future appeal or if the Apple patents it was found in violation of are shown to be invalid.

So the battle between these two tech behemoths could be far from over.
