Topsy, once a highly respected social media analytics company, announced today that it was shutting its doors. The San Francisco-based company was founded in 2007 and six years later, Apple bought it for more than $200 million.

According to TechCrunch, Topsy gained its initial acclaim for being one of the few analytics services available with full access to Twitter's user data. It allowed users to mine tweets dating back to 2006 and search for trends.

However, signs of an uncertain future for Topsy began to surface last year when the company halted annual renewals for its top-tier subscribers.
